Market Gardens in Year Five

  • November 23, 2020

  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

Over the last five weeks we have been working on a Maths project called Market Garden.

In this project our goal was to find the most cost-efficient essentials to help grow our fruit & vegetables. This project came with a ‘must have’ list which had all the necessary items for our garden.

Another aspect of creating our garden, was shopping for all the items we needed. These items all came from well-known websites such as Bunnings, Australia Gardening, Aussie Gardener and more. These prices we found on the websites needed to be rounded to the nearest whole dollar.

This real-life project included creating a logbook and designing our very own garden, it also included real life measurements and the total prices of all the wood needed to create our garden beds.

We really enjoyed creating our Market Gardens with our magnificent Mr. Millar!

Reading in Year Five

This term as part of our homework, we have started filling in nightly reading logs.

Our reading log has helped us to keep track of our nightly reading and make sure we do it every night. – Kadyn

Each morning we come into class and show our teacher our completed reading log. – Maria

It’s fun to do because we get to read aloud to our parents or siblings and it encourages us to read lots of books. – Maya

I have been reading to my mum, dad and brother and they have enjoyed hearing it. – Merrick

Here are some photos of Angelin’s fantastic reading log.

Life Ed in Year 5!

This week we had a visit from Life Ed in the Learning Hub.

We learnt about friendships and especially about what makes a good friend.

Gina set up lots of little games for us to work through in teams.

We also watched a video about some friends who were having a difficult time.

We learnt about what makes a friend respectful or disrespectful by putting some ideas in two columns.

At the end we finally got to see a very special visitor called Harold the giraffe. We also saw a photo of his Grandma!

We think this was a useful experience because it will help us with our friendships. We learnt a lot from this incursion.

Check out some photos from our sessions!

Silent Reading in Year Five

  • July 30, 2020
  • Louise Corkhill
  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

Each day we do silent reading after lunch to help calm us down after a busy lunch time. – Natalia and Ahnya

Silent reading helps to improve our reading skills, our vocabulary for speaking and writing and it gives us time to get through as many books as we can. Mikelah and Lachlan

Each Monday we go to the Library and borrow two books. – Teyla

We borrow one reading book of our choice and one Lexile book which is a book that is specifically targeted to our current reading abilities. – Ryder, Aiyana and Isaiah

After we finish our Lexile book, we complete a quiz which tests our comprehension and understanding of the text. – Charlotte and Abbey

We usually sit outside to get some fresh air while we read our books and find a nice spot near no one else. – Louis and Julien

We love reading books and hope to read many more in Semester Two! – Maria, Elijah

  • · Year 5 · Year 5 Blue · Year 5 Gold

Today we had inter-house cross country and Years Three to Six participated out on the school ovals. – Abbey

The Year Threes and Fours ran 1km and the Year Fives and Sixes ran 1.1kms. – Jack

We had a great time running our hearts out with our friends. We all had to persevere to get to the finish line! – Nathanael

Meanwhile, everyone else in the faction bays cheered the runners on. – Tyson

We are really proud of ourselves for finishing the race with a smile. – Sienna

Whenever someone needed some extra encouragement, we made sure to cheer for them, even if they were in a different faction. It was great to hear the house chants! We can’t wait for the athletics carnival in Week 9!

Check out some photos that Mrs Cogger took of us having the best time.
