On Tuesday 4th of November, our Year Six students were lucky enough to be the audience for students from Mazenod high school’s travelling drama production! Mazenod students have been visiting St Emilie’s for the last few years, and they have always presented an entertaining and informative experience!
The year 8 students from Mazenod performed a series of short skits featuring issues that our students may face next year in high school. They included things like travelling to school, making friends, peer pressure and much more.
Our students even got a chance to step onto the stage and play the lead role in some other improvised situations.
Aedan P stole the show when he became a “teacher” and stepped in to stop a bullying situation.
Kobe was a star when he made the choice to “do his homework” rather than play a game of soccer.
It was an entertaining afternoon and the performances certainly helped answer some of the questions our students had about high school.
Bravo Mazenod and many thanks!
Last weekend marked a very special time in our Year Six student’s lives as they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Masses were held on Saturday night, Sunday morning and Sunday evening and involved both students from our school and the St Emilie’s parish.
Candidates were supported at the Mass by their families and their sponsors, who are special people students have chosen to assist them spiritually in the years ahead – these sponsors are also a sign of the ongoing support of the entire Catholic community.
The Mass began with the students entering the church with their sponsor. Later, Father Chien confirmed each candidate by anointing their head with the oil of Chrism and making the sign of the cross, saying “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit”.
Students have really been preparing for their Confirmation over all their years of primary school, as each year they have been learning more and more about this Sacrament during Religious education lessons.
Each student chose a saint they admired, after studying the choices they made and the life they lived. Students completed a project to find out more about their saint and reflected upon ways they could go out and make a difference, just like their saint had.
We discussed the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and gave examples of how each gift could help strengthen us in our daily lives. Students learned that our soul gives both life to our body and inner strength for goodness. We looked at ways in which Jesus revealed heroic, spiritual strength to obey his Father. We also explored ways in which other Christian heroes have been strengthened by the Holy Spirit, and how Catholics are promised this strength through the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Thank you to everyone who attended provided their support over the weekend, and a big congratulations to all Confirmation candidates.
God Bless You All.
Our term 3 integrated unit, ‘Earth’s Awesome Forces’, focuses on the power created by the Earth and the curious forces that are produced.
To understand how the Earth produces energy and power we looked at the different layers of the Earth. We read different sources of information and created our own model of the Earth. We then discussed the different types of energy that the Earth produces. Some examples of these are tidal, solar, geothermal, wind and many others.
Students were broken into small expert groups and were given a specific type of energy to research. Once they had become “experts” on their own energy source, they worked with their group members to complete their question sheets. At the end of the lesson, students then stood in front of the group and shared a short summary of their energy source. Now in class, we have begun explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each type of power!
