Budgeting Experience in Year 3 B!

  • November 15, 2014
  • Louise Corkhill
  • · Year 3 Blue

This term we have been learning about our

needs_logo

( or necessities)

and our

Needs-vs-Wants

We worked with a partner and we started off with a $100 budget for each day. Olivia

At the start of the day we were given $100 and we had to pay some necessities or ‘bills’. If we wanted to we could purchase some wants throughout the day. Taj

We had to pay for infringements if we were fined for making poor choices like talking out of turn or not sitting on our chair properly. Luca

We had to make sure that when it was the end of the day, we hadn’t gone over budget. If we didn’t go over budget then that means we are people who save money rather than spend it all or over-spend! Georgia

We could choose from a few wants throughout the day. For example, outside brain breaks, 10 minutes of free time, working outside for 15 minutes, and lunchtime in the classroom. Jenna

What important lessons did we learn from this task?

We learnt that when you are older you might need to budget so you won’t spend more money than you are supposed to spend. Megan

I learnt that when you have a budget you wont buy lots of stuff, you only have a certain amount of money. If you buy too many things that you want you wont have enough money left over to pay for what you need. Mia

How can we use what we have learnt in the future?

If you go over budget in the future when you are an adult, you wont be able to pay for all of your bills and feed your family to keep them healthy. Jy

It would be hard to stay under your budget if you want a really nice house or car. Amali

This is us planning our spending with our partners, having a brain break, and filling out our receipt books.

Fractions and Famous Authors

  • August 16, 2014
  • Louise Corkhill
  • · Year 3 Blue

On Wednesday of Week Four we went to Amherst village to see a famous children’s author. Mia

Her name is Raewyn Caisely and she has written lots of amazing picture books and small chapter books that some of us had read! Amali

We learnt lots about how to write a narrative. Megan

Raewyn Caisley told us that the best way to write a narrative is by basing it on a feeling from your life. Olivia

She showed us a lot of her books. One of Raewyn’s books was about fishing. Her son wrote the best line in this whole book! Teodoro

Raewyn taught us that when you are writing a first draft of a narrative and you make a mistake, you just keep going and can fix it later. This helps you to keep the ideas flowing! Sigrid

She also taught us that a burger can help us remember how to write a story. Shanti

It has a beginning, middle and end. It also needs a pickle (problem) in the middle! Jy

We would love to read more of Raewyn’s books! She is a fantastic children’s author. Ky

NUMERACY – Fraction Men

We have been learning about Fractions this term. As a task we had to make a man out of fractions of a whole. Lachlan

These were the steps we took to create our Fraction Men:

  1. We were given 5 different coloured pieces of A3 paper. Jenna
  2. We used 1 whole as the body of our man. Nicholas D
  3. We folded a whole into two halves. We made one of these the head. Gisela
  4. Then we folded another piece into quarters – this is 4 pieces. We used these 4 pieces for arms and legs.
  5. We folded another A3 piece of paper into eighths. This is 8 pieces. This became four hands and four feet. Jack
  6. We folded our last piece of A3 paper into 16 pieces, or sixteenths. These became fingers and toes. Luke

Our Fraction Men have taught us that we can create things out of fractions of a whole. Georgia.

We learnt that fractions can be made out of anything. Paige.

We learnt that we can fold pieces of paper to equally share a whole. Miss Corkhill

Curiosity – Why? Why? Why?

images-1

This term we are learning all about the concept of Curiosity – the things that make us curious and some amazing facts along the way!

We started our Interact Unit by researching on the Guinness Book of World Records – This had so many amazing facts that made us want to know more! – Taj.

This term we are learning all about the Habits of Mind. In particular, our focus is Responding with Wonderment & Awe.

Wonderment involves asking Wonder Questions and Awe is when we find something ‘jaw-dropping’ and simply AWESOME!!! – Saoirse.

When we respond with Wonderment & Awe, we are open to our learning and then learn more. – Mia.

Our Curiosity unit has started to focus on Space and our Solar System. We have learnt that the moon orbits around the earth and the earth orbits around the sun. The Earth also spins on its axis! – Shanti.

Here is a little fact table that we have made:

The Earth takes 24 hours to spin on its axis – Teodoro
The Earth takes 365 days or 1 year to orbit the sun. – Nicholas B
The Moon takes ROUGHLY 28 days or 1 month to orbit the Earth. – Jenna.

We have started to read the book Esio Trot by Roald Dahl. In Week Two we started to plan a model of the tortoise in the text. We will include the process in our Three Way Interviews and the final product at Open Night in Week 9! – Sigrid.

We are loving the text so far because Roald Dahl is an amazing author!

MAI Groups

This term in Mathematics, we have started Year 3 and 4 MAI Maths Groups. We are learning so much about addition, subtraction, counting, multiplication and division.

I like how you can learn in partners while playing maths games! – Luke.
