Dear Families,

Wow! What a busy time it is at this end of the school year! We are hoping you are all managing to stay calm, grateful and happy amidst it all, as we are also aiming to do 🙂

We are now entering the Advent period – a time of great patience and expectation.

The challenge for us all is to support our children, amidst the worldly noise and clutter of tinsel, toys, shopping and rushing, to slow down… to listen with our hearts… to understand the Jesus message – that God broke into our world to remind us that we are so loved and that God promises us love, hope, joy and peace – a peace that every human soul yearns for…

Here at school we are challenged to focus on this big picture amidst the hustle and bustle of this time of year. Being mindful each day is the key …  we are called to try to act with kindness, gentleness and integrity, and this can be challenging at times.

Over the next fortnight students and teachers are finishing off the year, Admin staff are in the middle of AoS professional learning and a Financial Audit, and leaders are finalising  accountability requirements, planning for next year and trying hard to be as available as possible to children, staff and families.

We are of course are also busy preparing to farewell our wonderful Year Sixes, who graduate next Monday evening.

With Two-Way meetings finishing this week, it will be important that parents please allow staff the time and space they need to simply finish off well with students. We now need to preserve the energy we have left in our tanks, for kids!

In regards to next year, we cannot stress enough, the importance of downplaying who your child’s teacher will be and which of their peers may or may not end up in your child’s class. While staff have once again worked very hard on creating class lists that take a myriad of factors into account, in the final analysis, all children need to learn to navigate their way through different teaching styles and different peer personalities.

Our job as significant adults in a child’s life, is to model confidence in their ability to work through any perceived worries or challenges. We are all here to support them to do this and are looking forward to a wonderful 2020!

Have a great week everyone – if you would like to recharge your battery, you may consider coming along to the Community Mass this Wednesday, 4th December at 8.00am – all welcome.

Vivienne returned to St Emilie’s this week to talk to the students about what happens at the Materials Recovery Facility once all the recyclables have been collected from our homes.

The students learned about the whole process from the moment the truck is emptied onto the tipping floor until the materials are ready baled and ready for collection.

All the students played a sequencing game to demonstrate and show how the materials are recovered.

We enjoyed our visits with Vivienne and we wish her all the best as she spreads the message about recycling and the waste message.

Congratulations to Maria Gourley in 4G for her winning photo entry in the Chevron Focus Environment Competition.

Maria placed 3rd in the Years 3-6 category Focus on: WA’s habitats and ecosystems.

There were more than 100 entries from schools across WA.  Both Year 4 classes entered the competition this year.  Mrs Cogger took the students to the school bushland in Term 3 after giving the students a presentation about photography and how to capture a ‘good’ photo.

Maria’s photo will appear in The West Australian newspaper this week.  Mrs Cogger’s father gets the newspaper each day and he has been alerted to look out for it!

Maria receives a $100 gift card and a certificate and St Emilie’s school has received $250.  Mrs Cogger will add this money to her Science budget.

Here is Maria’s wining photo and caption.

Title: Bark and blossoming plants.  Caption: ‘Among the bark, there are plants beginning to grow and bloom.  All thanks to the source of sunlight’.

Discovering Decimals in Year Four!

  • November 8, 2019
  • Veronica Williams
  • · Year 4

This term in Year Four we have been learning all about decimals in Mathematics. We know that a decimal number is another way of writing a number which has a fraction. Decimal numbers can be less than or greater than 1.0. The decimal point is used to separate the whole number from the fraction.

Decimals are all around us! We see decimals when we are:

Recording how long something takes in minutes and seconds (time) – Julien

Making transactions at the shop (money) – Ahnya

Reading how heavy an object is using scales (mass) – Vyshnavi

Checking the weather (temperature) – Abbey

Understanding decimals helps us to measure more accurately!

To help us understand decimals, we have been exploring the relationship between decimals and fractions. We know that we can convert fractions of tenths easily into decimals. We have also been playing some games like ‘Human Decimal Number Line’ and ‘Converting Decimals Two-Step’. These fun games help us to make connections between fractions and decimals.

Did you know? Decimals can go on forever and ever! – Blake

Did you know? Decimals are related to fractions AND percentages! – Louis

We can’t wait to learn more about decimals!

Year Four Teachers

A huge Walkathon THANK YOU

Dear Families,

A huge thank you for all your support in making our only P&F fundraiser for the year such a great success!

Despite the weather, your fantastic children managed to complete the event with a smile on their dial and a spring in their step!

We are currently waiting on a few families to send in their SPONSOR MONEY and then on Monday Week 4 – the 4th November the Raffle Prize of a Bike Voucher will be presented to the lucky winner at our mini assembly.

Over their time here, every St Emilie’s child has, (or will ) benefit from the many projects, capital works, resources, programs and opportunities that the P&F money helps us to achieve.
On the school holidays we have a brand new play space being constructed in the PP area – replacing the original equipment which has now reached the end of its life.  We also have two very large shade sails going up over the Year 3-6 playground equipment. These represent a significant amount of money and the P&F Levy and Walkathon money will go some way to offsetting this cost.
These exciting projects will be available for you all to see when you return in 2020 next year!
Wishing you all a great term ahead,
Kindest regards
Tania and Stuart (Leadership Team) and Rachel Davies(P&F President)

Welcome Back to Term 4 2019!

Welcome back to Term 4 everyone!

We hope you and your family managed to spend some quality time together over the holidays and that your children return to us well rested, happy, healthy and keen to embark on the next nine weeks of learning and fun with peers, staff and families!

The next nine weeks will go very quickly, so our message to children is to make the most of the time we have left together and to keep on aiming high socially and academically.

Professional Learning

All staff have had a very interesting and rewarding two days here at school attending valuable professional learning opportunities.

On Monday we looked at the impact of trauma on children with our guest presenter, Sonja Vanderaa, a Senior Training Consultant at Australian Childhood Foundation. Sonja flew all the way from Tasmania to be with us and she was an excellent facilitator. We learnt how trauma typically affects a child’s development, behaviour, emotions and wellbeing, and we explored how staff and schools can and do play a key role in supporting children who may be dealing with experiences of trauma and adversity.

On Tuesday teachers headed out to a number of other schools to view exemplary practice focusing on areas of teacher interest and on whole school focus. They  returned highly energised and excited with new ideas, affirmation for their own practice and keen to try out some new initiatives in their own classrooms. Education Assistants spent their time exploring valuable resources and professional training offered by their Australia wide EA association.

Website

As you may be aware, we had hoped that our new website and school app would have been launched last term by the hard working husband and wife team of a local Perth company. Unfortunately however, one of them has suffered a severe stroke. We have decided to simply delay the launch until we have had an opportunity to meet and ensure that everything is ready to go live. We certainly aim to have these both ready for families asap and in the worst case scenario by the new year. In the meantime we will continue to use our existing website to communicate key information and we ask you to keep this family in your prayers.

Walkathon

A friendly reminder that as a school we are relying on money raised from the Walkathon (Week 2, Wednesday 25th October)  our one fundraiser for the year, to raise $25.00 per family.

Correct sponsor money is due back to the CLASS TEACHER by the Walkathon in a well sealed, clearly labelled envelope. Please clearly label the envelope – WALKATHON – STUDENT NAME – YEAR LEVEL / GOLD OR BLUE.

A sincere thank you to families for your support – every cent raised is used to help offset the cost of a variety of quality projects across our school. As you would be aware big projects cost big money. To install two large shade sails over our Year 3-6 playground equipment will be close to $40 000.

Please see this week’s Weekly Reminders email and web post for more details!

Congratulations

Our Year Two teacher Miss Candice Agustsson is now Mrs McClenaghan after her holiday marriage! We wish her and her husband James all the very best for a bright and happy future together!

We pray for each and every family in our community, that you will continue to nurture your children with wisdom and love and make a positive contribution to St Emilie’s, through a friendly smile, a kind word, a listening ear, a helpful hand.

Thank you!
