Year Four celebrated National Science Week with a visit to Scitech. We began our learning adventure with a visit to the Planetarium. While there we viewed ‘To Space and Back’ which helped us to discover the huge impact that space exploration, our greatest adventure, is having on our daily lives. We learned how it is affecting us every day through technology such as satellites, mobile phones, and even saving lives.
Our next stop was ‘Carnival of Science’. Here we uncovered the science behind our favourite sideshow attractions and investigated the physics, psychology and mathematics of this weird and wacky world.
The highlight of our excursion was when we saw the show ‘Ignite Your Curiosity’. We discovered the wonders of chemistry in the world around us through bubbling beakers, exciting explosions and fantastic fireballs.
Finally, our afternoon was spent exploring the different exhibitions that Scitech has to offer. Overall it was an action packed enjoyable day that left us wanting to learn more about scientific curiosities in our world!
The Book Week Theme for 2014 is all about CONNECTING to reading …
Below are some ideas to help your children get into the spirit of reading at home!
Perhaps once the challenges are completed you might be able to buy a new book for your child’s bedroom reading shelf – or visit the library to borrow a couple of new books!
Challenge One: Connect with your Family
Read a book to a family member, parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt or uncle or perhaps even your pet!
Challenge Two: Connect to Reading and CREATE
Cooking or crafting is a great way to engage with some purposeful reading. Choose a recipe book from home or the library and cook a recipe from this book or choose a craft book, read and follow the instructions and CREATE!
Challenge Three: Connect from Afar
Read a book to someone you know living interstate or overseas. You might like to use Skype or a phone or you may like to record yourself reading a book and email it to someone ( with parent permission).
Challenge Four: Connect with an Author or Illustrator
Look up one of your favourite authors or illustrators online. Leave a message on their webpage, blog, Facebook page (with parental guidance) or Instagram account (with parental guidance) telling them why you love their work.
Challenge Five: Connect with a Text
Read a text you don’t normally read – perhaps a graphic novel, a newspaper, a magazine, comic strip, instruction manual for your microwave…anything at all! Record here the type of text you connected with.
Challenge Six: Connect with History
Read a historical fiction book or a non-fiction book about a particular time in history which you are interested in.
Challenge Seven: Connect with Technology
Read a text (for example a newspaper, magazine, blog entry or book) using a Kindle, iPad, computer or other device. Many libraries allow you to borrow e-books.
Challenge Eight: Connect with Friends
Lend a book you love to a friend and tell them why you enjoyed this book.
Challenge Nine: Connect with Others
Donate a book (a second hand one you no longer want, or a new one) to a charity or school or library.
On Wednesday 13th August 2014 the Year Fours were lucky enough to visit the Amherst Village Library to meet local author, Raewyn Caisley.
Raewyn is a children’s author who lives close by in Fremantle. She has worked as a primary school teacher and has always had a lot of fun with her class during writing time! Raewyn has met a lot of great characters in her life, some of whom are the inspiration for her books.
During our visit, Raewyn explained that she uses her ‘real life’ experiences and feelings to create stories and this helps her to bring her stories to life! She shared with us some personal stories that meant a lot to her, as well as some of the inspiration she has used from her personal life for ideas to write her stories.
During our visit Raewyn gave us some fantastic ideas and tips to help us make our writing “sparkle”. Some of her tips were:
• You need to “hug a fat secret”
• Keep it simple
• Use your own words
• Choose the right details
• Keep it real
• Show, don’t tell
• Include real feelings
The Year Fours are now looking forward to applying Raewyn’s advice to their own narrative writing. We hope to share some of our creative stories with you soon.
Year Four Gold began the term by celebrating National Diabetes Week. To learn more about diabetes we watched two ‘Behind the News’ stories and then participated in a variety of integrated literacy tasks. The topic was also picked up in the student’s Health Lesson with Mr Davis. Later we also worked collaboratively in small groups and used a simple and familiar tune to create a song about diabetes, that will hopefully help to educate others about this serious health issue. We are currently adding the final finishing touches to our songs and look forward to sharing them at our 3-way interviews.
Luke holds the “Sun” while Isabelle holds “Earth” to demonstrate how Earth orbits the Sun.
In Year Four Blue we have had a great start to our Integrated Inquiry unit titled: Curiosity, Why, Why, Why? As a class we are learning about the relationship between the Sun and the Earth. We have found some really interesting facts so far. We also visited the websites below. Did you know that the scale of the Earth to the Sun (in diameter) is approximately 110 to 1? This means that approximately 1.3 million Earths could “fit” in side the Sun! There is now so much more we want to learn about Space – stay tuned for more discoveries!
Congratulations to all our House Cross Country winners for 2014 – a fabulous effort! Congratulations also to all students who gave it their very best and finished off their race, earning valuable points for their House team.
The Interschool Team will head off next Thursday to compete between our regional Catholic Primary schools at Tomato Lake. Please make sure your child’s Bus Permission Slip is signed and returned ASAP, thank you.
A special thank you to Mr Davis for organising Cross Country training over the last number of weeks – very generous use of your free time and greatly appreciated in our lead up to the event.
As per the term planner and an earlier note sent home, at least one Year 4 parent of children who are making their First Holy Communion this year are required to attend the PARENT/CHILD WORKSHOP which is to be held THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING,18th June.
There are two sessions being offered and you can elect which one you wish to attend:
Session 1: 5pm in the School Hall ( finish time: 6.15pm) (School and Parish Staff in attendance)
Session 2: 7pm in the School Hall ( finish time: 8.15pm) (Parish Staff in attendance)
