The following information was emailed to all Year 4 families from St Emilie’s on 2 July 2015
As you will read in the note from Lyn Harkins, the Parish Sacramental Co-ordinator, the sign-up sheets for the First Eucharist masses will be available in the church foyer from Saturday 4 July. The masses are due to be held on the following dates and the number of candidates at each mass will be limited to 14! If you have particular dates, times that are best for your family, I suggest you go to the church before 6.30pm mass on Saturday to ensure you have the date you require.

As part of our Sustainability Unit, Year Four Blue have been investigating the important area of recycling.
Recycling is the process of making or manufacturing new products from a product that has originally served its purpose. If these used products are disposed of in an appropriate, environmentally friendly way, the process of recycling has been set in motion. We watched an episode of Behind the News (BTN) to further our understanding of the process of recycling.
We have designed posters to help people understand the importance of recycling. Have a look at the wonderful ideas that the students presented in their posters.

On Wednesday June 3rd the Year Threes and Year Fours attended a really fabulous excursion to Kings Park. The purpose was to support our learning about the importance of environmental sustainability and finding ways to ensure that the flora and fauna we have is preserved.
It was a day full of rich learning and a great deal of hands on activities!
As part of our ‘Sustainability’ unit of work Year Four have been learning about what a plant is and the different types of plants.
We used the app ‘Total Recall’ to create a mind map of all the things we know about plants.

We then learned about the parts of a plant and how important they are to people and our environment.
Plants are important to people because they:
- Give us oxygen to breathe.
- Are used to make some medicines.
- Are used to make clothing.
- Are used by animals to make their homes.
- Help hold soil down so it doesn’t get blown or washed away.
- Help cool down the Earth.
- Help water go up into the clouds so it can rain.
There are many different kinds of plants. They vary in size, shape, colour, smell, and the places in which they grow. Plants can be classified (organized into groups) in different ways. One way to classify plants is by their general appearance. There are woody plants, non-woody plants and vines.
We have discussed how plants that have developed, grown naturally, or existed for many years in an area (such as Australia) without human introduction, are called native plants.
To consolidate our understanding of different plants Year Four went on an organised scavenger hunt around the school. We were given different types of plants to locate and identify.
We were then required to photograph each plant as we discovered it and our findings were presented using a ‘Pic Collage’.
We really enjoyed this activity and learned many interesting facts about plants!

On Friday the 24th April the Year Fours presented the ANZAC Centenary Assembly.
On ANZAC day we honour all the men and women who have participated in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world, including the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.
One hundred years have passed since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. The Year Fours helped to honour this very special occasion by reading and acting out the story of ‘Gallipoli’, by Kerrie Greenwood and Annie White. The students really gained a sense of what life was like for the soldiers who fought for Australia, in appalling conditions, and of the mateship and courage that emerged for these heros.
Dear Parents, welcome back to Term Two! I hope you found the time to relax and to spend some quality moments with your families over Easter and the holidays. We are looking forward to embracing an interesting and productive term.
The guided inquiry integrated focus for Term Two is concerned with Sustainability and our unit is titled, “Wow! Look what we’ve Got!” During this unit of work the students will be thinking about the importance of acting responsibly in our world and being prepared to play an active part in helping to solve some of the issues we all face.
A quick reminder: Please return any overdue library books from last term and encourage your child to remember to bring in their library bags on Wednesday mornings for borrowing between 8.30 and 8.50 am. It is difficult to organise the borrowing of library books other than this time so anything you can do at home to remind your son or daughter to remember their bag is appreciated.
I am looking forward to seeing the students back at school on Monday and hearing all about the exciting stories from their holidays!
