On Friday the 24th April the Year Fours presented the ANZAC Centenary Assembly.
On ANZAC day we honour all the men and women who have participated in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world, including the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.
One hundred years have passed since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. The Year Fours helped to honour this very special occasion by reading and acting out the story of ‘Gallipoli’, by Kerrie Greenwood and Annie White. The students really gained a sense of what life was like for the soldiers who fought for Australia, in appalling conditions, and of the mateship and courage that emerged for these heros.
Dear Parents, welcome back to Term Two! I hope you found the time to relax and to spend some quality moments with your families over Easter and the holidays. We are looking forward to embracing an interesting and productive term.
The guided inquiry integrated focus for Term Two is concerned with Sustainability and our unit is titled, “Wow! Look what we’ve Got!” During this unit of work the students will be thinking about the importance of acting responsibly in our world and being prepared to play an active part in helping to solve some of the issues we all face.
A quick reminder: Please return any overdue library books from last term and encourage your child to remember to bring in their library bags on Wednesday mornings for borrowing between 8.30 and 8.50 am. It is difficult to organise the borrowing of library books other than this time so anything you can do at home to remind your son or daughter to remember their bag is appreciated.
I am looking forward to seeing the students back at school on Monday and hearing all about the exciting stories from their holidays!

Open Night was a huge success with many parents and families coming along to see the results of the students’ hard work throughout the term. It was really lovely to see families spending quality time together. Thanks so much Mums and Dads for making the time to come along – it really means a lot to your children!
Last week we had the pleasure of inviting Mr Greg Mitchell into our school and into our classroom. Greg gave us some really effective and interesting strategies that we can now apply and use in our classroom. It was a really insightful and educational visit for both students and teachers and we were reminded about these important social skills:

We have had a very productive start to the term and the students have shown themselves to be hardworking and enthusiastic learners.
Here are some of the things we have discovered as well as what we like about being in Year Four Blue:
- We have enjoyed learning about what life was like for early Aboriginal people and the ways they used the land so effectively.
- We are looking forward to building our own Aboriginal shelters.
- We have tested our mental maths skills in games of ‘Addition Bingo.’
- We are thrilled to have our new iPads! We have spent time exploring some great maths applications and sharpening our numeracy skills.
We are looking forward to a great term ahead!
This term, as part of our ‘Necessity’ unit of work, the students have been learning about the difference between a ‘need’ and a ‘want’. To begin, everyone in the class was asked to fill out a ‘Christmas Wishlist’. The class then debated about and brainstormed different needs and wants. Here are some of our ideas:
We then came up with our own definition of what a ‘need’ and a ‘want’ are. Our definitions were:
- A need is something that you can’t live without and it helps you to survive.
- A want is something that is enjoyable to have but you don’t need it to survive.
Each person was then required to review the items on their ‘Christmas Wishlist’ and classify them as a ‘need’ or a ‘want’.
The students have also been learning about the necessity of budgeting. They have learned what the word ‘budget’ means in the context of our daily lives.
The students were then provided with the opportunity to plan and manage their own classroom budget to help them consolidate and apply their understanding of wants, needs and budgeting. Everyone enjoyed this task, however, some of us found out about the harsh realities of life such as the infringements you are forced to pay when you break the rules. On the flip side, many of us were able to enjoy some special treats! 🙂
This term we have had some special “no frills” pets in our classroom. They are grey, soft and smooth – you guessed it – they are silkworms! Four Blue have been fascinated as we have observed the silkworms making their way through their two month life cycle of eating, sleeping, spinning their cocoons and finally emerging as moths, ready to lay eggs and begin the cycle all over again. They really are amazing creatures!
