Year Four celebrated National Science Week with a visit to Scitech. We began our learning adventure with a visit to the Planetarium. While there we viewed ‘To Space and Back’ which helped us to discover the huge impact that space exploration, our greatest adventure, is having on our daily lives. We learned how it is affecting us every day through technology such as satellites, mobile phones, and even saving lives.
Our next stop was ‘Carnival of Science’. Here we uncovered the science behind our favourite sideshow attractions and investigated the physics, psychology and mathematics of this weird and wacky world.
The highlight of our excursion was when we saw the show ‘Ignite Your Curiosity’. We discovered the wonders of chemistry in the world around us through bubbling beakers, exciting explosions and fantastic fireballs.
Finally, our afternoon was spent exploring the different exhibitions that Scitech has to offer. Overall it was an action packed enjoyable day that left us wanting to learn more about scientific curiosities in our world!

We are having our own Science week here at St Emilie’s in week 8. The 2014 topic is ‘Science Feeding the World’. Both Health and Science will be doing extra activities with the students in week 8. Mr Davis will be doing an activity with year 5 about where our food is sourced from. Each year 5 student is to bring to school a photograph of their evening meal. So sometime between now and week 8 choose one of your favourite dinners, take a photograph of it and then print it out ready to bring to school. The students are not required to bring their photos until week 8.

Our term 3 integrated unit, ‘Earth’s Awesome Forces’, focuses on the power created by the Earth and the curious forces that are produced.
To understand how the Earth produces energy and power we looked at the different layers of the Earth. We read different sources of information and created our own model of the Earth. We then discussed the different types of energy that the Earth produces. Some examples of these are tidal, solar, geothermal, wind and many others.
Students were broken into small expert groups and were given a specific type of energy to research. Once they had become “experts” on their own energy source, they worked with their group members to complete their question sheets. At the end of the lesson, students then stood in front of the group and shared a short summary of their energy source. Now in class, we have begun explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each type of power!
