Under pressure …. with Mr Sayer

This week the students in 6B had a visit from Mr Sayer, our mentor from the Scientists in Schools initiative.

Mr Sayer facilitated a lesson on force, mass and measurement.  He used a variety of materials to demonstrate the concepts and students then worked in their cooperative teams to investigate water pressure.

Our first investigation was to take a cup with a small hole in it.  Fill the cup with water.  Then cover the hole with a fingertip.  Drop the cup from a height.  As the cup falls to the ground observe what happens to the flow of water from the hole?

For our second investigation each team had a 2L bottle that had three holes drilled into it.  The students observed the flow of water from the holes and conducted a a test to see how the flow changes when the lid is put back on or released.

Mrs Cogger found this youtube clip that demonstrates this investigation. This investigation is easy enough for the Year 6 students to demonstrate to their families at home.
