In Mathematics we are been learning about MONEY!
In Year 2, we want to know how to…
Count and order small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value.
We have been enjoying many different ‘hands on’ activities in the classroom, allowing us to practise our money counting skills and strategies!
In our classroom shop we are playing the roles of ‘shopkeeper’ and ‘customer’.
We are learning how to use calculators to add amounts together, making sure to use the decimal point when entering dollars and cents.
Playing in the classroom shop is a great way to practise adding a collection of coins to create a given amount.
In ‘Roll One Dollar’, we race against a partner to be the first one to collect ‘one dollar’.
This game challenges us to think about how to exchange a collection of smaller coins for a bigger coin of the same value.
There are some great apps on the iPads to develop our knowledge and understanding of coins and notes.
We have had fun using ‘Jungle Coins’ and ‘Money Mind AU’.
Our ‘Money Task Cards’ challenge us to problem solve and show our understanding of the value of different coins and notes.
As a part of our inquiry into ‘Necessity’, we have also worked with a partner to plan our own picnic!
We had a budget of $50 and needed to choose items from a supermarket catalogue to take on our picnic.
The tricky part was using a calculator to add up the cost of each of our items (and make sure we hadn’t spent over our budget)!
We are looking forward to some more money fun in our last week of Term 3!
Do you have old towels or sheets that you are not using?

Dear Parents and Students
Firstly thanks for joining me on Open Night. There were several parents asking me about the Scribblebots. Many people were interested in letting their child make one in the holidays. Here is a link to my Weebly website with some links on how to make your own.
There were also some inquires about he Hexbug Nanos and where they can be purchased. I used a website called Fishpond.com and found them on the website in packs of 6 or 8 for a very good price. Here is a link to Fishpond.
For those families that entered the Remote Control Vehicle challenge, Here are the winning results
Car number 25 the black 4 wheel drive – winning time was 17 seconds by the Catalano family.
Car number 44 the red 4 wheel drive – the winning time was 15 seconds by the Currulli family.
Car number 68 the red sports car – the winning time was 17 seconds by the Costello family.
Well done to the above families. Thanks for participating.
There was also a Robotic Arm Challenge on Open Night and then fastest time was 50 seconds. Owen O’Leary was able to pick up 12 counters with a robotic arm and move them into an egg carton in 50 seconds. Well done Owen!
Have a great day at the carnival tomorrow. Go Gannon!!
