This term we are exploring the concept of ‘NECESSITY’ and are learning all about where certain resources come from and what is involved in getting them processed.
One of the resources we are learning about is… POTATOES!
At the start of this term we planted our own potatoes in the school vegetable garden. Mr Cogger taught us how to plant the potato seeds and we are now waiting patiently for the stems of our potato plants to start poking out of the ground.
We needed to cover the potato seeds with soil like a nice warm blanket!
We also got to meet a REAL potato farmer! Farmer Carlo visited our classroom all the way from Manjimup and had lots of knowledge and experience to share with us!
We learnt all about how potatoes are planted and harvested, as well as where the potatoes that are grown on the farm end up.
Did you know that it is better to buy potatoes with the dirt sill on? The dirt acts like a sunscreen and stops the potatoes from going green.
There are so many different potato varieties… pink skin, purple skin and even ones shaped like a banana!
We were even lucky enough to take some of these delicious potatoes home!
Thanks Karri Country Gourmet Potatoes! We can’t wait to cook something delicious with our potatoes at home!
Stay posted for some updates on our very own potato crop!
