Last year we started a project aimed to assist children who may find navigating the highs and lows of playground life a bit overwhelming. We wanted to offer an opportunity for all children to be more aware of the needs of others and become closer as a community by inviting them to care for one another during recess and lunch breaks.
We created our very own version of a “Buddy Bench” – a safe place where students can sit if they have lost their friends or are having trouble finding someone to play with.
When a child sits on the buddy bench they can be easily spotted by other students who can invite them to play, or be spotted by a staff member who may offer some suggestions about who they can play with.
We were fortunate enough to have two benches, one for junior students and one for senior students, donated by the activities organiser, Brodie Hall, of Bunnings Warehouse in Harrisdale.
The colourful design you see on the benches was made possible by Jim McClenaghan of The Painters, who donated his time and skills, painting the benches by hand.
We are very thankful to all those who generously contributed, allowing this project to come to life.
