Term Two – Week 7 Mathematics
We have been consolidating our learning of positional language in mathematics. This week, the children have been playing a game using the “stick bot” figures, along with a range of other materials on a tray. The object of the game is to follow instructions, using positional language terms, to move the stick bots and place them in different positions. After listening to and following each direct instruction, the children then were asked to retell, using positional language, exactly what they had done with their stick bot figures.
This week we have been exploring shadows. Our class discussions led us to questions such as, What makes a shadow? Where can we see shadows? Why do shadows form? What colour are shadows? What happens to a shadow if we tread on it? Can we see shadows at night time? Are shadows visible on a cloudy day? We examined and photographed a number of shadows in our outdoor environment and then observed and discussed this further, after viewing the photographs via our Apple TV.
We enjoyed a game of shadow chasey with our partners – we had to follow, catch and tag our partner’s shadow! We created one long line outside our classroom and observed what our own shadows looked like whilst we were still and then what happened to our shadows whilst we were moving…our shadows copied what we did!
We also loved listening to and watching Justine Clarke’s song: “My Shadow & Me”
