Term 4 – Week 8 – 25th November 2017
THE SEASON OF ADVENT
Sunday 3rd December 2017 marks the beginning of ADVENT and ends on Sunday 24th December 2017. As this Holy season approaches, the Kindy children have been learning about the meaning of ADVENT. Advent is the four weeks of expectant waiting and preparation for the coming of the Nativity at Christmas. The word “ADVENT” derives from Latin, meaning “COMING.”
We have had a number of discussions in our class about what the TRUE meaning of Christmas is all about. We have talked about and shared the various traditions and preparations that take place within our families and school life. PRAYER is one way that we can all prepare our HEARTS for the COMING.
The children have learnt that ADVENT is a time of WAITING…we are waiting for JESUS.
They have learnt about the Advent wreath and the four CANDLES that are lit at Mass – one candle is lit each Sunday until Christmas. There are three purple candles and one pink. The pink candle is the third candle to be lit on the third Sunday of Advent. One white candle may also be present and this candle is lit on Christmas day.
The candles symbolise HOPE, FAITH, JOY and PEACE
The colour PURPLE is reflected during the season of Advent. Purple represents WAITING and PREPARING.
Purple = Prayer, Penance & Preparation
The Kindy children were engaged in an activity where they cut out a pattern from a paper towel square. They then placed coloured ice blocks onto the paper towel to form various patterns. The objective of this task was for the children to spend some time practicing PATIENCE and WAITING for their ice to melt before they could complete their task.
We hope that all families will be able to spend some time together this ADVENT reflecting, preparing and discussing with the children the true meaning of CHRISTMAS.
