02/06/18 Term Two – Week 5
We have all been very HAPPILY and BUSILY working these last few weeks! The Kindy children have been engaged in:
- Role Playing
- Problem Solving
We invited Miss Jessica Agustsson as a GUEST SPEAKER to our class to talk to the children about BAPTISM. Jorja very excitedly one morning came to Kindy and shared her family news of the Baptism of her baby brother Jon. Jon was Baptised at St. Emilie’s Parish. Jessica kindly brought along the beautiful Baptismal gown that Jon and Jorja wore at their Baptisms. This gown is a family heirloom, passed down from generation to generation and also worn by Jorja’s mum and Aunty. We viewed photos of Jon’s special day and saw some of the important SYMBOLS of Baptism, like the Baptismal candle and white vestment. Jessica demonstrated how the priest blessed baby Jon with HOLY WATER at the Baptismal font.
We will be learning more about BAPTISM and WATER in the coming weeks. Thank you to Jessica, baby Jon and Jorja for sharing their special family celebration with us!
Our Peggy Lego Pre-writing patterns and rhymes have been a good precursor to what we are progressing towards. We continue to use Peggy Lego through our large “writing” on the board. We are learning about good, comfortable pencil grip and we use large body movements as we move across the board to draw and write our rainbow patterns. All of these skills we are practicing now, will help with formation of letters, writing and drawing. We have begun practicing how to write our names and spell them! We also enjoy painting and drawing at other learning centres within the environment.
MATHS: POSITIONAL LANGUAGE
We have been learning about positional language mathematical terms. This coming week we will be playing a game in small groups to consolidate our knowledge of positional language, using concrete materials and picture cards. Below, some of our friends are physically demonstrating the meaning of some of these terms.
SCIENCE: SGRAFFITO SCRATCH ART
We have been talking about the night sky and what we may see, hear and feel at night time. We viewed a youtube clip about FIREWORKS, which the children loved and we observed some photos of fireworks. The children shared their experiences of viewing fireworks during class discussions.
We created sgraffito art works depicting FIREWORKS in the night sky!
RE: LOOKING AFTER GOD’S WORLD – SUSTAINABLE LIVING!
We had so much fun discussing, planning, writing about and finally PLANTING our own vegetable patch! We initially had a group discussion about the types of vegetables and plants that we would like to grow in out Kindy Patch! We read a big book called, “Up, Down & Around” and we learnt about vegetables that grow up, some that grow down and others that grow around (like vines). We then decided which vegetables we would like to grow and together we wrote a list. Mrs Poinen took a photo of our list and went to Bunnings to purchase our seedlings. We examined the seedlings the next morning and checked off against our list, which ones Mrs Poinen was able to find. It was a very rainy day when we planted our vegetables. How amazing is GOD who knew that our garden needed plenty of rain!
SCIENCE: STARRY STARRY NIGHT
We examined and discussed the art work of Vincent Van Gough’s “Starry Starry Night” and viewed a youtube clip about his many paintings. The clip included the song “Starry Starry Night” by Don McLean. We taught the children, by modelling and discussing each shape in this piece and we demonstrated step by step how they could draw their own “STARRY NIGHT” picture. The children used their own creative and artistic abilities to have a go at creating their own art piece.
The children are using the VICTORIAN app on our iPads to practice letter names, sounds and correct formation. The great thing about this game is that the app will not let the children continue or complete each letter, if the formation of the letter is incorrect. It teaches then correct formation of each letter (upper case and lower case) as well as directionality.
DRAMATIC PLAY – LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AND ROLE PLAY
Our dramatic play space, in keeping with our DAY/NIGHT inquiry learning has been transformed into a backdrop for SPACE ADVENTURES and camping. Our budding young astronauts are set to BLAST off in search of new planets the moon and stars! Dramatic play allows children to socialise, interact with one another, have fun, learn cooperative and sharing behaviours, use imagination, develop oral language skills, build confidence and develop life skills!
What a busy and productive few weeks we have had! As you can see, there’s always plenty of engaging learning activities on offer in Kindy!
