Term Two – Week 7 – 16th June 2018
This week in Kindy we were lucky to have another special visitor in our class! Father Giovanni came to talk to the children about BAPTISM and ST EMILIE DE VIALAR, the patron saint of our school, in the lead up to St. Emilie’s Feast Day (17th June).
To celebrate St. Emilie’s Day, on Friday in Kindy, we learnt about the work that St. Emilie did throughout her life. We looked at some pictures of St. Emilie as she was growing up. We discussed the things that Emilie did to help others (like providing food and medicine to the poor) and how she listened to God’s calling. The children chose various mandalas to work on throughout the day, as part of our celebration. Together, we prayed the St. Emilie’s Prayer. We also listened to our school song, “Growing in Grace.” The children (and staff) LOVED this song. At the end of the day we played “Growing in Grace” again and this time, many children decided to get up, dance and move to the beautiful liturgical music.
We discussed with the children how this song was originally written, produced and sung by children from our school choir, many, many years ago. Did you know that the school staff at the time this song was written, were all asked to contribute one WORD that they felt represented St. Emilie’s? All of these words were incorporated into our school song! How special!
To watch the children enjoy and dance along to our school song was a lovely end to our class celebrations for St. Emilie’s day.
Here are a few of the other things we have been working on:
The Cat’s Pyjamas!
We read the texts, “The Cat’s Pyjamas” and “The Elephant’s Pyjama’s” and we worked on drawings of the cat from the text. We used basic shapes such as squares, circles, lines (like tall man, short man, over the gate), rectangles and triangles to create the cat. Then the children thought about and designed new pyjamas for their cat and drew these too! What great work!
10 Frame Number Play!
We have been playing with 10 frames, counters and numerals to match and count up to 10 and some of us are working towards numbers up to 20…that means, we have to use TWO 10 frames!
We have been working on an umbrella and water craft art piece for a couple of weeks now because this PROCESS ART takes TIME. One of the first steps, was to create our marbled paper, using shaving foam and beautiful watercolour paints. This step was so much fun! We are now up to tracing, cutting and gluing to piece the picture together!
Outdoor Fun & Social Skills!
We really enjoyed the sunshine this week and playing outdoors! Within our class we always talk about all the POSITIVE social skills that make a GOOD friend. We know that it is important to be kind to our friends, use kind words when speaking to each other, be HONEST and gentle in our play and interactions with one another. These, and many other social skills are what we are learning and practicing at Kindy everyday!
We are SO EXCITED about our Kindy PYJAMA DAY next Wednesday 20th June…don’t forget to wear your jammies and bring along your favourite teddy!
