On Wednesday afternoon the Year 6 Science Inquiry Group shared their STEM challenge journey with an invited audience of their parents and peers. This year a group of students applied to join the Solar Boat STEM Challenge. Throughout terms 2, 3 and 4 the students met with Mrs Cogger each week to plan, design and construct a solar boat.
Here are a few photos of the students giving their presentations and sharing their solar boat journey.
Once the presentations were over the students took their boats outside to the paddling pools and each boat was assessed to see if it had met the criteria that the students as a group had determined at the start of this project.
The criteria for a successful boat
- Boat sails in a straight line.
- Motor ‘goes’ consistently. No stopping and starting.
- Propeller ‘stays’ in the water.
- Boat floats.
- Boat and electronics are ‘balanced’.
- Electronics are ‘above’ the water.
Well done to all the students in the Science Inquiry Group. You have been a delight to teach and it has been an honour to watch you grow and challenge yourselves.
