What’s Been Happening in Our Class?
25th May 2019
We kicked off Term Two by welcoming and enjoying the company of our very special mothers and grandmothers in our Pre-Primary setting. The children worked hard to create cards, unique handmade gifts and prepare their song to present to mums on the day. It turned out to be a lovely, fun filled morning and we hope all families will have some treasured memories to keep forever!
We have been reading a variety of stories as a class and the children have really enjoyed joining in reading together. In our guided reading groups, the children are learning many important early reading skills. Each week we focus on a new letter and sound. The children have been excited about going on a letter hunt at home, to find and bring in items that begin with our letter focus. As they present their items to the class they are developing oral language skills and confidence in speaking. With support, the children are learning to write a sentence…or two!
The children are becoming so good at counting on our hundred chart. We know how to count by tens! Each day we are getting closer to the hundredth day of school! In our maths groups we have been learning about shapes, how to count on from 10, simple addition, writing numbers, counting backwards from 20 and forwards from 20. We have been having fun finding and measuring different things in our classroom too. We have been singing number songs and have learnt the TRIANGLE dance! The children love the triangle dance!
May is the month of Mary and in our class we have been learning all about the Rosary and how to pray Mary’s Prayer, the HAIL MARY. Each morning throughout May, we offer our prayers to Mary and together we say three Hail Mary’s and the Glory Be. We have been learning about the Church Community as well as other communities that we belong to, including our family, school and neighbourhood. We know that Jesus belonged to many different communities too and we are called to love and serve others within our communities. We visited our church to discuss what we see, hear and feel in God’s house. The children have also been busy creating their own maps of their neighbourhood. Their maps are amazing!
In our inquiry unit “Sustainability” we are learning about different ways that we can all do our part to look after our earth. We are reading a series of books about our earth: “Why do I have to recycle?” “Why do I have to save water?” “Why do I have to protect nature?” “Why do I have to save energy?” We have set up a mini recycling centre in our classroom and are challenging ourselves to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! We have now collected and counted over 100 lids! Well done PPB! We have learnt about the triangle visual on all recyclable materials and where to find it, so we know what to put into our recycling bins at home! We are also thinking of unique ways to reuse plastic or cardboard by creating artwork or planting seeds! We now know where our fruit and veggie scraps go at school, when we collect them in our scrap bucket everyday. Two friends empty the scrap bucket into our school compost bin, so nothing gets wasted or thrown away in the bin! We are having fun learning about how to keep our earth happy!
We sure have had a productive few weeks of learning, thinking, growing, belonging, being, becoming, creating, doing, listening, speaking, sharing, cooperating and working together! Although we have been busy, we have not forgotten, the most important learning of all…love, friendship and PLAY!
There’s always time for PLAY!
