Dear Year Three families,
We hope you enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable weekend! Welcome back to Week 4.
This post is to provide some more information about the Literacy Pro Reading program which your child may have begun participating this year.
General information regarding Literacy Pro was included in our Parent Letter. If you have not yet had a chance to read this, here is a link to the school website post http://web.stemiliescps.wa.edu.au/?p=36831. Please make sure you set some time aside to do this as it will clarify a number of procedures and expectations for you.
In Year 3, students are becoming more independent readers. The Literacy Pro program supports children to continue to build on their reading ability and comprehension by recommending texts at an appropriately challenging level. Students will be introduced to this program when they are at an appropriate independent reading level.
The Year Threes have sat an initial assessment in Week 2, which has given them a ‘Lexile measure’. We then use this measure to identify a number range and a corresponding book which they may choose from the Lexile section when borrowing one of their books at the Library. This means your child will now borrow 2 books on a Wednesday when we go to the Library. One book will be their Lexile book and the other book will be a book of their choice. Please remind your child to keep their library bag in their school bag.
Once they have finished reading their Lexile book, students will log onto Literacy Pro here at school and complete a short comprehension quiz (10 multiple-choice questions). This is an enjoyable and valuable way for students to practise their comprehension skills and reinforce their understanding of the text. It also provides teachers with valuable information about a students’ comprehension and reading skills.
Your child has brought a letter home in their folder which will give you some more information about Literacy Pro and their Lexile measure. It is important to understand that each child is on their own learning journey and our focus is to work hard towards our own individual goals, avoiding ‘comparing Lexile numbers’ with others. We have explained the Literacy Pro process in detail to your child here at school. You are asked to please have a chat with your child about the borrowing process, logging on to Literacy Pro at school and exploring the online library.
We are looking forward to catching up in Week 6 and 7 at Two-Way Interviews to celebrate your child’s achievements and learning so far in Year 3.
Kind regards,
Jodie Ryan & Veronica Williams
